All the Help You Can Get

I have a problem accepting help from others. I am a very independent person and throughout my life I have grown very accustomed to doing things on my own. It is my first hand nature to simply roll up my sleeves and get to work on whatever needs done. Whether the washing machine breaks or the lawn needs mowed and I’m wearing an eye patch and can barely see to mow it, I get things accomplished. I push through the pain. I stretch myself. I even get overwhelmed trying to get it all done, but I get it finished.

Asking for help is something I do not like to do but I am getting better. There was a time when it was a pride issue. Then it turned into an issue of not wanting to inconvenience anyone. But today’s passage makes it clear that when something needs addressed, it is important to seek advice from others, to get help from others. Wise guidance. We all need wise guidance. The verse refers to getting this advice before we make war; however, help is needed in many facets of life.

We are not meant to do life alone. We are supposed to have a community of people to which we belong, and the community is to help encourage, strengthen, comfort, equip, support, and interact with each other. When someone needs help, the group is there. When someone falls, the group helps to pick them up. Ecclesiastes made it clear that two is better than one so we need to never push people away. We need to remember that counsel is important, and that we should appreciate and take all the help offered. Refusing is denying the blessing. Refusing is piling the burden on your shoulders. Refusing to do life with others is living in a way God never intended.

“Form your purpose by asking for counsel,
then carry it out using all the help you can get.”

-Proverbs 20:18 [MSG]

Settling Down With God: A Study of 1 Kings

Image This book is a 10 Session Bible Study book great for both individual study or group Bible study.

I just finished working on this new project, Settling Down With God: A Study of 1 Kings. Funny enough, when God gave me the title, I initially thought that He wanted me to write about coping with AdHd in a biblical manner, because AdHd is something that both my daughter and I have learned to deal with over the years. Nonetheless, I waited for His direction and later learned that I was way off course.

I was very excited to dig deeper into 1 Kings for this project, as it is always a book I enjoy reading. There is so much there; I am always amazed.

For my first three books, and my 4th book (the Daily Good complimentary 14-day Devotional), I actually used my own personal photography. Each of the photos on all four of those books were taken in Australia. I wanted to do things differently this time around. My daughter is quite the artist and I asked if she could design the book cover. She merely was told that it was a Bible study book on 1 Kings.

As my daughter completed the book cover, I was working on the text. When we both were finished, my daughter sat by my side and helped to edit the cover till it was as she thought best for her vision. She told me that the puzzle pieces were used on the cover because it represents how each one of us is a special piece, we each are different, but we belong to one body. Then she said at the same time, our lives are made up of different pieces. I was so impressed by what she has already learned so far, to see her vision brought to life, and to work with her on this project.
