The Last Adam Outline

10-8-17 Down the Road: Sin from the Beginning – The Last Adam

Sin from the Beginning

Romans 5:12– When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

Free Choice – Allure of Satan – Sin

Sin of Unbelief – Chose to believe Satan rather than God

Sin of Pride – Even after sinned, would not acknowledge fault – blamed Eve & God (who gave him the woman) – Genesis 3:12 is TAYLOR SWIFT – “LOOK WHAT U MADE ME DO”

Genesis 6:5– The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. [NOAH AND THE FLOOD]

Sin caused some of our likeness of God to be lost. We still bear the image of God, but we are faulty image bearers. We lost the moral image likeness – the holiness & righteousness. We still share the natural image likeness (intellect, feeling, will).

As a result… INHERITED DEPRAVITY

Moral condition we are all born into

Spiritual death passed onto every child of Adam

Each of us have a deep corruption of nature.

Romans 5:15– But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.

By the merits of Christ, all men are cleared from the guilt of Adam’s actual sin. All the imputed guilt of the original sin is removed in Christ for everyone.

No one has the guilt of Adam hanging over head – it is removed in Christ.

Romans 5:17– For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Man has sufficient grace so that he can choose to go with God.

Romans 5:18 – Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.

Though man is born into world inheriting the guilt of Adam and under the curse of sin, yet God’s grace is extended to him. This removes the guilt of Adam’s sin and extends the power to lift him to a place of redemption and new life!

“In Christ, we gain more than in Adam we lost.” – John Wesley

ADAM & JESUS

Miraculous Beginning

Genesis 1-2– handmade by God and given the breath of life

Luke 1:26-35– child of Mary thru the Holy Spirit.

Made Without Sin

Placed in the Garden in state of holiness and perfection

Ecclesiastes 7:29– “This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes”

Hebrews 4:15– Jesus lived His whole life without sin.

Given Authority over Creation

Genesis 1:26-29– Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish, the birds, all animals…

Colossians 1:15– Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation

Matthew 28:18– All authority on heaven and earth has been given to Me (Jesus).

Given a wife by God

Genesis 2:21– Eve made from rib bone of man

1 Corinthians 6:15-17– Our bodies are actually parts of Christ, jointed to the Lord – one spirit with Him, our body a temple of the Holy Spirit, BRIDE OF CHRIST – THE CHURCH.

THE LAST ADAM

1 Corinthians 15:45-52– The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam–that is, Christ–is a life-giving Spirit. What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven. Earthly people are like the earthly man, and heavenly people are like the heavenly man. Just as we are now like the earthly man, we will someday be like the heavenly man. What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that our physical bodies cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. These dying bodies cannot inherit what will last forever. But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

Colossians Study: The Gospel Truth

[Colossians 1:1-8]

The Gospel is…

  • Good News of God (v. 5)
  • The Word of Truth (v. 6)
  • The Message of God’s Grace (v. 6)
  • Centered in a person – Jesus (v. 4)
  • Universal – It is for the whole world (v. 6)
  • Humanly transmitted (v. 7)
  • Productive – Multiplies (v. 6)

People believed. People were discipled. People were faithful in Christ.

FAITH in Jesus and LOVE for God’s people that spring from HOPE stored up in heaven (v. 4-5)

HOPE…

God’s way = the best way

How blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways. (Psalm 128:1 NASB)

God’s way = the only real peace

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 ESV)

God’s way = the only real joy

I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! (John 15:11 NLT)

God’s way = the only true and lasting reward

So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. (Hebrews 10:35 NIV)

Bible Study Questions:

1) How does Paul introduce himself to the Colossians? How does he address the Colossians?

2) Paul wrote that he was thankful for the Colossians. What specifically made Paul thankful and excited for this church in Colossae? (see v. 3-8)

3) Paul never met the people in Colossae. Who shared the Gospel with these people? How is he described?

4) What is the Gospel? Read Acts 2:22-24, Acts 16:30-31, and 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

5) One of the unmistakable characteristics of the Gospel is God’s grace in all its truth. John 1:14, 17 says: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth… For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (ESV).

How do you define grace?

How do you define truth?

How can you share God’s grace?

How can you share God’s truth?

Reserved Hope

Reservations are great. It is awesome when you can make a reservation to be sure you have a spot. I remember reserving particular classes. I enjoy reserving a hotel room so I know when I’m traveling that I have the comfort of a nice room waiting for me. My son loves to reserve new video games so his game is ready right when it comes out in the stores so it is guaranteed to be there.

In Colossians 1, we read about this hope that we have in heaven. It is a reserved hope. It is reserve and waiting. This is the truth. This is what we can expect. We can rejoice in knowing that we have this reserved hope, this guarantee of heaven. We won’t lose our spot.

When the day drains you, when you are exhausted, when you feel like everything is caving in, remember this great hope. Remember that you have a space reserved. Remember that God has so much more for you just waiting for you. There are some things reserved on earth for you, things you need to step forward and claim. There are some things reserved for you in heaven—and one day they shall all come to light. Rejoice in this hope. Rejoice that you my friend have a reservation.

Because of the hope [of experiencing what is] laid up (reserved and waiting) for you in heaven. Of this [hope] you heard in the past in the message of the truth of the Gospel. – Colossians 1:5 [AMP]
