A Living Sacrifice Outline

10-22-17 Down the Road: A Living Sacrifice

God loves you! – NOTHING CAN SEPARATE YOU FROM HIS LOVE (Romans 8:31-39)

Believe in Jesus & be Saved (Romans 10:9-13)

Romans 12:1– And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice–the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. [NLT] WE ARE ALL MADE TO WORSHIP – ARE YOU A LIVING SACRIFICE?

Align Sight

Hebrews 12:1-2– Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. LOOK AT JESUS, NOT AT YOUR SITUATION OR PROBLEM

Put on your God glasses – look at people like God sees – made in His image

Align Thinking

Romans 12:2– Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. [ESV]

Romans 12:3Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.

Matthew 16:23– But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” [ESV]

Philippians 4:8– Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [NLT]

Colossians 3:17– And whatever you do, whether in WORD or DEED, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. [NIV]

Align Speech

Romans 12:12- Rejoicein hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. [ESV]

1 Peter 4:11– If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.

Align Deeds

Romans 12:9 – Don’t pretend to love people. Love with genuine affection. Honor each other(bestow value upon a person). Hate evil. Hold on to what is good.

Romans 13:14 – But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. [NASB]

Colossians 3:12-14Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. [ESV]

Romans 12:11Don’t be lazy in showing your devotion. Use your energy to serve the Lord. [GW]

Romans 12:13Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. [NIV]

Romans 12:16 –Live in harmony with each other.Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! [NLT]

Romans 12:17 –Never pay back evil with more evil.

STAY ON THE ROAD – ENDURE TO THE END – KEEP THE FAITH

Passionate Patience

Recently I shared a message on passionate patience. I was reading about the church in Philadelphia and I came across this verse. The people kept God’s command to endure patiently. There are many times in this phrase “endure patiently” or “passionate patience” or “enduring patience” is mentioned in the Bible. John, Luke, Peter, and Paul all use the same word to mean this phrase.

We each can have passionate patience. Hebrews 12 tells us to remove the hindrances around us and fix our eyes on Jesus. The only way you can endure—the only way you can persevere is to keep yourself on the path Jesus has for your life by keeping your eyes fixed on Him.

The world will continue to tell you otherwise. The world will continue to try to pull you in different directions. I pray you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. May you press forward in the race He has for you, not swerving or slowing down for the roadblocks of the world.

“Because you kept my Word in passionate patience, I’ll keep you safe in the time of testing that will be here soon, and all over the earth, every man, woman, and child put to the test.” – Revelation 3:10 [MSG]

Here’s a message outline on Hebrews 12:1. You can download this outline below.

Passionate Patience

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” – Hebrews 12:1 [NLT]

In 1845, the ill-fated Franklin Expedition sailed from England to find a passage across the Arctic Ocean.

The crew loaded their two sailing ships with a lot of things they didn’t need: a 1,200-volume library, fine china, crystal goblets, and sterling silverware for each officer with his initials engraved on the handles. Amazingly, each ship took only a 12-day supply of coal for their auxiliary steam engines.

The ships became trapped in vast frozen plains of ice. After several months, Lord Franklin died. The men decided to trek to safety in small groups, but none of them survived.

One story is especially heartbreaking. Two officers pulled a large sled more than 65 miles across the treacherous ice. When rescuers found their bodies, they discovered that the sled was filled with table silver.

What strengthens and encourages your relationship with Jesus? What is beneficial?

What disrupts or interrupts your relationship with Jesus? What is a hindrance?

Sin, habits, pleasures, self-indulgences, associations that hold you back, worldly cares, riches, honors, opinions, activities, possessions, relationships, careers. Anything that occupies our time, energy, affections to neglect time with the Lord and our pursuit of Christ-likeness.

Jesus is the goal of our journey and companion on the way

Go steadily forward in the race and refuse to be deflected: Hupomone (hoop-om-on-ay) – cheerful or hopeful endurance, enduring patience, patient continuance (waiting). Passionate patience – Perseverance or Patient Endurance – 2 Pet 1:6, Rev 3:10, Rev 14:12, 1 Cor 13:7, Lk 21:19

  • COMMIT YOURSELF: BOLDLY CLAIM IT CAN BE DONE!! It’s already been done. Great cloud of witnesses – inspiration – motivation – what we see in them – Hebrews 11 Hall of Faith
  • FOCUS ON YOUR WEAKNESS – Admit you cannot do life alone. You need Jesus. Passionately seek Him with all you have. Know Him, love Him, worship Him.Fix your eyes on Him.
  • ADMIT YOU AREN’T FINISHED YET. “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.” – Philippians 3:12 [NLT] Passionately pursuing Jesus –Press on to the finish
  • EMBRACE HARDSHIPS & STRUGGLES AND REMOVE OBSTACLES & DISTRACTIONS. Hardships are opportunities for growth. “Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” –C.S. Lewis “Problem of Pain

Hebrews 12:2 Fix your eyes on Jesus

Drawing Us Closer

We often talk about being rescued. Most people believe that being rescued means that a person is saved from a dangerous or stressful situation. But when Paul wrote that “the Lord rescued,” it means so much more. To fully understand what it means when the Lord rescues, helps us to embrace everything that comes our way.

The word rescue is translated rhýomai. The meaning of rescue from the Lord is that the Lord draws oneself, in this case Paul, to Himself. The situation, the persecution, the suffering, whatever it may be, was used by God to bring Paul closer to Him.

We may say we need rescued by God from a situation. We may say that only God can get us through a particular trial. These things are true. But to be rescued by God is not simply to be saved from the situation. When He rescues us, He draws us close. The situation you might be going through right now can bring you closer to God. If you allow Him to move through and you look to Him in the process, you will find yourself much closer to Him. The Lord can rescue you from all.

“You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings–what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.” – 2 Timothy 3:10-11 [NIV]
