Rejoice and Reflect Outline

12-24-2016 Christmas Eve Sermon

  • Expectation leads to preparation (for what is to come)

  • Expectation leads to intense focus (on what is to come)

  • Expectation leads to positioning (for what is to come)

For the last 4 weeks, we have been celebrating the coming of Jesus

We had great expectation for this weekend to celebrate the birth of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ

Back then, the people waited for the promised Messiah, but they did not have the whole story – they did not know His true purpose.

We know the story. The whole story…. Jesus Christ was born to die.

1 John 4:9 – “God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.” [NLT]

During Advent, many of you have prepared to celebrate the birth.

During Advent, many of you have been more focused on Jesus.

Tonight, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we look at the positioning we take when we are in the presence of Jesus… the positioning of REJOICING and REFLECTION.

When people encounter Jesus, they REJOICE and REFLECT

The three wise men bowed down and worshipped him (Matthew 2:11).

When the shepherds encountered Jesus, they glorified & praised God for all they heard & seen (Luke 2:20)

As we celebrate Jesus, we REJOICE

When we think of rejoicing, we think of singing

For 4 weeks, we spoke about 4 different songs, THE ORIGINAL CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST

Mary’s Song of Anticipatory Faith

Zechariah’s Song of Fulfillment

The Angels’ Song of Peace

Simeon’s Song sung while embracing Jesus

Today, we sing a New SongHe puts a new song in our hearts and on our lips

Psalm 149:1 Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song.”

As we celebrate Jesus, we also REFLECT

Mary treasured things. She kept all these things in her heart. She thought about them often (Luke 2:19).

What do you treasure in your heart about Jesus?

Remember how He moved in your life over the years.

Where are you and Jesus at right now?  Consider your relationship.

Are you prepared for Jesus to move?Have you made room for Him in your life? Are you expecting Him to move?

Are you focused on Jesus, the Perfector of our faith? Are you living for Jesus? Are you seeking Him with all you have?

Are you giving your all where God has positioned you, trusting that He is doing something right now through you?

Every day we can celebrate Jesus. Every day we should celebrate Jesus.

Fall at His feet. Rejoice. Reflect. The King is Here!

A Living Sacrifice Outline

10-22-17 Down the Road: A Living Sacrifice

God loves you! – NOTHING CAN SEPARATE YOU FROM HIS LOVE (Romans 8:31-39)

Believe in Jesus & be Saved (Romans 10:9-13)

Romans 12:1– And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice–the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. [NLT] WE ARE ALL MADE TO WORSHIP – ARE YOU A LIVING SACRIFICE?

Align Sight

Hebrews 12:1-2– Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. LOOK AT JESUS, NOT AT YOUR SITUATION OR PROBLEM

Put on your God glasses – look at people like God sees – made in His image

Align Thinking

Romans 12:2– Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. [ESV]

Romans 12:3Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.

Matthew 16:23– But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” [ESV]

Philippians 4:8– Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [NLT]

Colossians 3:17– And whatever you do, whether in WORD or DEED, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. [NIV]

Align Speech

Romans 12:12- Rejoicein hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. [ESV]

1 Peter 4:11– If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.

Align Deeds

Romans 12:9 – Don’t pretend to love people. Love with genuine affection. Honor each other(bestow value upon a person). Hate evil. Hold on to what is good.

Romans 13:14 – But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. [NASB]

Colossians 3:12-14Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. [ESV]

Romans 12:11Don’t be lazy in showing your devotion. Use your energy to serve the Lord. [GW]

Romans 12:13Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. [NIV]

Romans 12:16 –Live in harmony with each other.Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! [NLT]

Romans 12:17 –Never pay back evil with more evil.

STAY ON THE ROAD – ENDURE TO THE END – KEEP THE FAITH

Hebrews 11:39-40– These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something betterfor us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. [NIV]

Hebrews 10:36You need enduranceso that after you have done what God wants you to do, you can receive what he has promised. [GW]YOU WON’T ALWAYS SEE THE FRUIT RIGHT NOW!

2 Timothy 4:7– I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. [NLT]

The Last Adam Outline

10-8-17 Down the Road: Sin from the Beginning – The Last Adam

Sin from the Beginning

Romans 5:12– When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

Free Choice – Allure of Satan – Sin

Sin of Unbelief – Chose to believe Satan rather than God

Sin of Pride – Even after sinned, would not acknowledge fault – blamed Eve & God (who gave him the woman) – Genesis 3:12 is TAYLOR SWIFT – “LOOK WHAT U MADE ME DO”

Genesis 6:5– The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. [NOAH AND THE FLOOD]

Sin caused some of our likeness of God to be lost. We still bear the image of God, but we are faulty image bearers. We lost the moral image likeness – the holiness & righteousness. We still share the natural image likeness (intellect, feeling, will).

As a result… INHERITED DEPRAVITY

Moral condition we are all born into

Spiritual death passed onto every child of Adam

Each of us have a deep corruption of nature.

Romans 5:15– But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.

By the merits of Christ, all men are cleared from the guilt of Adam’s actual sin. All the imputed guilt of the original sin is removed in Christ for everyone.

No one has the guilt of Adam hanging over head – it is removed in Christ.

Romans 5:17– For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Man has sufficient grace so that he can choose to go with God.

Romans 5:18 – Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.

Though man is born into world inheriting the guilt of Adam and under the curse of sin, yet God’s grace is extended to him. This removes the guilt of Adam’s sin and extends the power to lift him to a place of redemption and new life!

“In Christ, we gain more than in Adam we lost.” – John Wesley

ADAM & JESUS

Miraculous Beginning

Genesis 1-2– handmade by God and given the breath of life

Luke 1:26-35– child of Mary thru the Holy Spirit.

Made Without Sin

Placed in the Garden in state of holiness and perfection

Ecclesiastes 7:29– “This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes”

Hebrews 4:15– Jesus lived His whole life without sin.

Given Authority over Creation

Genesis 1:26-29– Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish, the birds, all animals…

Colossians 1:15– Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation

Matthew 28:18– All authority on heaven and earth has been given to Me (Jesus).

Given a wife by God

Genesis 2:21– Eve made from rib bone of man

1 Corinthians 6:15-17– Our bodies are actually parts of Christ, jointed to the Lord – one spirit with Him, our body a temple of the Holy Spirit, BRIDE OF CHRIST – THE CHURCH.

THE LAST ADAM

1 Corinthians 15:45-52– The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam–that is, Christ–is a life-giving Spirit. What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven. Earthly people are like the earthly man, and heavenly people are like the heavenly man. Just as we are now like the earthly man, we will someday be like the heavenly man. What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that our physical bodies cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. These dying bodies cannot inherit what will last forever. But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

Bible Study Questions:

  • The passage mentions that because of the sins listed, the wrath is coming. How does that relate to us? Do we face this wrath? Do these sins have any consequences for us?
  • What are some actions we need to take or things we need to do to take responsibility for our actions?
  • What is the hardest to take responsibility or blame for in your own life? Why is it so hard?
  • Verse 13 mentions bearing with one another and forgiving one another. What does it mean to bear with one another?
  • Verse 14 says that love binds everything together. Explain what that means to you and what that means for the church as a body.
