The Angels Song “Gloria” 12-11-16

  1. 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests” (NIV)

The word peace appears over 400 x’s in the Bible

The word PEACE – Eiréné – “i-ray-nay”

“Tie together/joined/wholeness, all essential parts are joined together”

 

PEACE WITH GOD – “God and sinners reconciled”

Isaiah 9:6– For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end.

Colossians 1:20– For it was the Father’s good pleasure … through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross

Romans 5:1– Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.

 

PEACE WITH OTHERS – “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9)– “the ones who work for peace”

2 Corinthians 5:18-21– And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to Himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making His appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

2 Corinthians 13:11– Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.

2 Timothy 2:22– pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace

1 Peter 3:11– turn from evil/do good; seek peace and pursue it.

 

PEACE OF GOD – “A Peace that surpasses understanding”

God is the Source of our Peace

Psalm 29:11– The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace.

  • Father God (Philippians 4:7)– Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
  • Jesus Christ (John 14:27) – I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
  • Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22)– one of fruit of the Spirit

Isaiah 26:3 – You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! (Shalom peace – “completeness”)

Overflowing Love

When the word overflowing comes to mind, I always think of the disasters that occurred over the years. The pots on the stove that overflowed while cooking, creating a huge mess. The clog toilet that overflowed. One of the biggest things that comes to mind is the time the creeks, lakes, and rivers overflowed during the flood and we saw people paddling down the streets, and houses and roads devastated by flood waters. Something that overflows is excessive and unable to be contained.

Now think of overflowing love. This is a love that pours out of us in excess. It is outrageous. It is uncontained. It is something that comes from God. Remember, God the Father loved us so much that He sent His one and only Son (John 3:16). Jesus Christ commanded us to love one another just as He loved us (John 13:34). The Holy Spirit poured out to all believers produces fruit, and love is the first mentioned (Galatians 5:22).

God’s love is described as unfailing, unconditional, and eternal. God’s love is overwhelming, immeasurable, and relentless. The Spirit of God can help you to love deeper and wider. Pray for the compassion, love, for a heart for people. Ask the Spirit to help you to love like God loves. Pray that your love with overflow. May this love be excessive. May this love be outrageous. May this love pour out everywhere you go and point everyone you encounter to the One Who is Love.

“I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.” – Philippians 1:9 [NLT]

More Than a Story: Fruitfulness

[The Unproductive Fig Tree: Luke 13:6-9, Withered Fig Tree: Matthew 21:18-22]

Colossians 1:9-10“For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” [NIV]

*BEARING FRUIT IN EVERY GOOD WORK*

  • Filled with the knowledge of His will
  • Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord
  • Bearing fruit in every good work

INTERNAL FRUIT + EXTERNAL FRUIT

            Internal Fruit – Deeper walk with God which produces: Fruits of the Spirit

            External Fruit – Abiding in Christ impacts relationships and increases effectiveness of your ministry

Galatians 5:22-23a – “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” [NLT]

John 15:5“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” [NASB]

John 15:8, 11“My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples… I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.” [HCSB]

“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Bible Study Questions:

1) Looking at the Parable of the Unproductive Fig Tree, who is:

            The Vineyard Owner –

The Vineyard Keeper –

2) The Keeper of the Vineyard pleas with the Owner to give another chance. What does this say to us?

3) In Matthew 21:18-22, we read of the Withered Fig Tree. The fig tree bears a false resemblance of one that would have fruit. How can we appear to be fruitful but not yet not bear any fruit?

4) What does the Withered Fig Tree represent to us? What can we take from this message?

5) Read Colossians 1:9-10. The passages mentions being filled with the knowledge of His will, to walk in the manner worthy of the Lord, and about bearing fruit in every good work. How can we:

            Be filled with the knowledge of His will?

            Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord?

            Bear fruit in every good work?
