Mail Truck

Recently I noticed something. Mail trucks and vans do not have license plates. I never knew it. For some reason, I never looked for their license plates. I happened to be stopped behind a mail van during my travels and found myself staring at where the license plate should be and thought to myself, who knew?!? I missed it and yet I see mail trucks every day. I have seen hundreds, maybe thousands, of mail trucks.

Whether you have good vision or failing vision, you could miss something like that if you aren’t intentionally looking. In the same way, when you are going through your day, you can miss how God is moving if you are not living intentionally. This means recognizing that you are living continually in the presence of God. This means keeping your eyes fixed on Him and following His leading. This means not being overly busy or drowning in the ungodly.

God brings people into your path. Surrounding you are the unseen angel armies and the visible beauty of Creation. Given to us is His Word and the Spirit of God is poured into us the moment we declare the name of Jesus. Too often we declare the absence of God—we question if He is truly active and moving in our lives. With our attention elsewhere, we miss seeing Him move. We instead have our eyes focused on where we expect Him to be, despite knowing we do not think or imagine as God. Today, take time to sit in the silence. Breathe in. Listen to the quiet. Get away from the noise. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you in a new and awesome way. Then be continually aware of His presence as you go through your day. Continue your conversation with Him throughout the day. Expect Him to move. Enjoy the God who is with you always.

“I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” – Psalm 16:8 [NIV]

A Shirt Reminder

The other morning a dear friend told me about an encounter she had wearing a FearNot Ministries t-shirt. While she was at a local store, someone saw her wearing the shirt and revealed that she was struggling. Because of the struggles she was facing, she just that morning turned to the Bible. She read a verse that told her not to fear—that God was with her. When my friend walked into that store, the FearNot immediately caught her eyes and she remembered what God’s Word promised her that morning.

God’s Word has so many promises, more promises than I can list in a short devotion. When we live our life knowing and trusting in these promises—knowing and trusting God and His Word—life is very different. You cannot recognize God at work, you cannot know God, unless you know His Word. It is so very important to open up your Bible and read. Don’t stop reading. Every day read. Then when you are going through struggles, when you are facing a difficult time in your life, when you are not sure which way to go—you will have His Word written on your heart.

The other day three beautiful girls came over with these hearts they made during church service. The heart displayed a verse that spoke of writing God’s Word on your heart. I asked the girls, “How can you write God’s Word on your heart?” The answer is easy – read God’s Word. Read God’s Word. Delight in His Word. Cherish His Word. Eat His Word. Chew upon it. Take it in. Treasure it. Store it up. Embrace it.

“You, God, are my God,

earnestly I seek you;

I thirst for you,

my whole being longs for you,

in a dry and parched land

where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary

and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life,

my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live,

and in your name I will lift up my hands.

I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;

with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;

I think of you through the watches of the night.

Because you are my help,

I sing in the shadow of your wings.

I cling to you;

your right hand upholds me.”

-Psalm 63:1-8 [NIV]

Always on Duty

The other morning I had a rude awakening. It was 3 a.m. so I was out cold. All of the sudden I heard barking. Max doesn’t bark for fun. He is not very vocal unless there is a problem. I quickly ran downstairs to find a neighbor’s friend was wandering around to the wrong house, attempting to get into our home. When Max started barking, he realized he was at the wrong place. I could even hear the fear in his voice when he asked the neighbor to let him in. Max is a good guard dog and he’s usually on duty, even at three in the morning.

God is ALWAYS on duty. The Psalmist wrote that “The LORD himself watches over you.” He watches over you. He doesn’t need to have someone else do it. He personally does it. He wrote further, “The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade.” Not only does God watch over you, but He stands beside you. He is with you. And He protects you.

These aren’t promises on pages—these are real truths. Take these words to heart my friend. God watches over you. I could write books about the many, many times He was watching over me, and that’s just the moments I noticed. Imagine when I wasn’t paying attention! Let us thank Him for His protective shade and His watchful eyes. Let us thank Him that He always is with us through it all.

“The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade.” – Psalm 121:5 [NLT]

When God Steps In

I have seen a lot of images lately that say, “When God steps in, miracles happen.” The images and phrase are actually borrowed from bestselling author Neale Donald Walsch, who wrote a book with that title. I agree that miracles happen. Miracles happen every single day. Much of the time they go unnoticed because people are unaware of the presence of God. As we become more aware of His presence in the world and in our own lives, when we become more certain that our days are written beforehand and He is in control, when we believe in Him and become aware that He has a great plan for our lives and He is always with us, we tend to notice the miracles more often. On numerous occasions I wondered what it would be like to sit on the outside and look at all of the miracles as they occurred like in a flashback video sequence and see all of the things I missed. I am sure I have missed 99% of what God has poured out for me.

Our God is always with us. He promised us that He would not leave us—He would not forsake us. Jesus promised us the Comforter —the Holy Spirit—so that we were able to have God with us always. No matter where we are and no matter what we are doing, we are with God. Some people might understand the saying “God steps in” to mean that there are moments when He steps out. He never steps out on us.

Miracles happen every day. Each one of us is a miracle. I don’t challenge you to sit back and imagine your own flashback video sequence depicting the miracles of God in your own life, but I do encourage you to be more aware of how God is moving in your life. To become more aware, you need to be intentional with your relationship with God. Prayer. Daily Bible Reading. Journaling. Worship. Being part of a church community. These things will help you to be more aware of God’s presence in your life and they will help you to grow in Christ. When you become more aware of God moving in your life, suddenly life as you know it changes. You finally realize that you, yes you, are not alone. God is with you every step of the way, and He is fixing to do some mighty work in your life in you and through you. Embrace Him. He’s already embraced you.

“If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you. I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you another Friend so that you will always have someone with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you!”  – John 14:15-17 [MSG]
