Presence of God Outline

Presence of God – 4/23/2017

God always desired to dwell with us

If God is just visiting in your life, things will return back to normal when glory leaves.

[Psalm 27:4] – The one thingI ask of the LORD–the thing I seek most–is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in His Temple.

Is God dwelling with you? Are you dwelling with God?

[Genesis 3:8-9] – the Lord God walking about in the garden, they hid because they realized their nakedness, He asked “Where are you?”

Tabernacle– “mishkan” (dwelling place, tent) – in the Wilderness

[Leviticus 26:11-12] – I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people.

[Exodus 33:11] – Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting.

Temple –  in Jerusalem

[1 Kings 8:27-30] “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O LORD my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place.”

[Acts 17:24-25] – The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, and human hands can’t serve his needs–for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.

[Zechariah 2:10-11] “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the LORD. And many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.

DWELL – “shakan” or “shaken” (shaw-kan’) – to settle down, abide, dwell – this word is derived from rabbinic word “shekhinah” (Shekhinah Glory – divine presence of God)

[Matthew 1:23] – Immanuel “God with us

[John 1:14] –  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (Pitched His Tabernacle/Tent, Tabernacled with us)

[Ephesians 2:21-22] – In whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

“naos” – (nah-os’), place of divine dwelling place

  • Jesus paid the penalty for our sin (Romans 5:8)

If you believe in JESUS – the Spirit of God is dwelling within you.

Grace and Truth

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth… For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. – John 1:14, 17 [ESV]

God’s Word is Truth (John 17:17)

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the life (John 14:6) – The Way to the Father, Truth itself, Life eternal

What about Grace?

Grace is Enough / Amazing Grace / Scandal of Grace / Sufficiency of Grace / Outrageous Grace

Grace Abounds / Only Grace / Saving Grace / Irresistible Grace / Unmeasured Grace

Beauty of Grace/ Fields of Grace / Grace Changes Everything / Grace Flood

Grace is the unmerited favor of God. Grace is getting what you don’t deserve.

  • Gift – Gift from God (Romans 3:24)
  • Received – Received by Faith (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 4:16)
  • Available – Available to Everyone (Romans 4:16, Romans 10:13)
  • Christ – Grace comes through Christ (John 1:17, Romans 5:15, Galatians 2:21)
  • Eternity – It’s Extended Throughout Eternity (Romans 6:23)

(Acrostic Credit – Rick Warren)

Grace is…

  • Restoring – wipes out guilt & helps you start over (Isaiah 43:25)
  • Sustaining – gives you power to endure (Philippians 2:13)
  • Healing – does miracles in your life (Psalm 147:3)
  • Liberating – helps you break free from perfectionism / upholding the Law (Matthew 11:28-30)
  • Assuring – helps you defeat your fear & doubt (Romans 8:37)

Vertical Grace (God to us) vs. Horizontal Grace (us to others)

Love that reaches up is adoration. Love that reaches out is compassion. But love that stoops is grace.

– Charles Swindoll

Grace brings conviction faster than rebuke!

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. – Ephesians 4:29 [NLT]

Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! – Romans 12:16 [NLT]

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:11 [ESV]

See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. – 1 Thessalonians 5:15 [NASB]

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. – Ephesians 4:2 [NLT]

Poor Alignment

This past week something happened to my shoulder again. I have been told in the past that I have a week shoulder. Something happened at work that knocked me out of alignment. I cannot explain how it happened; I work in an office. All I know is my alignment was off.

I believe that my alignment was off for a long time, but our bodies are so complex and compensate for injuries and misalignment. Today, I go to the chiropractor to find out what has happened. This doctor will search for misalignment and adjust everything necessary if possible. I have heard stories of others who had one leg shorter than the other, and swift correction in a session.

We also can have issues of misalignment. We are to be connected to Christ (John 15:1-17). The Bible speaks of a plumb line that is used to adequately measure (see Isaiah 28:17). For us, our plumb line is the Truth- it is the Word of God, and Christ is the Word (John 1:1-18). So often, we can misalign when we start to believe the lies of the devil and this world. At times we begin to align ourselves with things God never intended to be part of our lives. He has this perfect plan and this special purpose for your life. It is greater than you can ever imagine. Today ask for the Holy Spirit to help you evaluate your alignment with the One Who is the Great I AM, to reveal anything that may have you a bit misaligned.
