Staying the Course Outline

8-6-17 Summer Survival Series: Staying the Course

Know the Place of Destination

Acts 20:24– However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. [PAUL’S FAREWELL TO THE EPHESIANS]

2 Timothy 4:7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

REMAINED FAITHFUL

1 Corinthians 9:25– Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. However, they do it to receive a crown that will fade away, but we a crown that will never fade away.

1 Corinthians 9:25– All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.

Their leaves of the crown from their games was made of leaves which didn’t last

RECEIVE A CROWN THAT WILL LAST FOREVER – ETERNAL LIFE

Know the Road to Travel

Matthew 7:13-14 – You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.

TWO GATES, TWO ROADS, TWO DESTINITES (HEAVEN OR HELL)

The Narrow Road is a Difficult Road

Luke 13:24– Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

Isaiah 35:8– A highway will be there, a roadway, And it will be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean will not travel on it, But it will be for him who walks that way, And fools will not wander on it. (The Glory of Zion) TRAVEL ON THE HIGHWAY OF HOLINESS MEANS WE WALK IN GOD’S WAYS

Know the Direction to Take

John 14:6– Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 6:40– For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in himshall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

Know the Stops to Make

Hebrews 12:1– Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

Romans 13:10b-13– … the commandments are summed up in this one decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. PUT ON CHRIST

Know the Turns to Make

Psalm 119:105– Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. BE IN THE WORD.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understandingin all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. TRUST + SUBMIT – HE WILL SHOW YOU THE PATH TO TAKE (FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE)

Ephesians 5:15-17Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. EXAMINE YOURSELF, USE TIME WISELY

John 15 – Abide in Jesus. If you remain in Him, He will remain in you. You will be fruitful. Remain in His love. Keep His commands.Jesus says… Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love… Lay down your life for your friends.

Know the Tolls to Pay

Don’t sacrifice who you are in Christ

Philippians 3:8– What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ. THE PRICE PAID IS CENTERED ON CHRIST OR IT IS A LOSS

Invest in the Kingdom

Matthew 6:20– But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.

1 Timothy 6:18-20– Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge. GUARD THE DEPOSIT ENTRUSTED TO YOU

The Choice

We live in a world full of choices. Sometimes I stand before a menu or I look to make a purchase of coffee or gum, and I wonder what to decide. We have so many choices, so many options. But when we look at life, there is no gray area. We have life and death. We have a blessing and a curse. God’s Word is very clear. You have the choice. He paved the way.

Don’t complicate God’s Word. The options are clear. You can choose life or death, heaven or hell, a blessing or curse. The world tells you that God sends people to hell; that is a lie. People choose hell. God’s Word is very clear. Anyone who believes in Jesus Christ is saved (Romans 10:13). Anyone who chooses not to believe in Jesus Christ will be condemned.

Today, look at the big choice you have made. Have you made the choice of life or death, prosperity or disaster? Have you made the choice between a blessing and a curse? Do not think because you are good, that you are going to heaven. Only those who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will find everlasting life. Know this truth. Share this truth. Don’t love your family and friends to hell. Tell them that there is only one way to the Father, and His Name is JESUS (John 14:6).

“Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse!” – Deuteronomy 11:26 [NLT]

“Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the LORD your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy. Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” – Deuteronomy 30:15-19 [NLT]

Truth for a Lie

Imagine if you had this precious gem that was worth more than anything else in the entire world. Imagine if you found something that’s more amazing than anything you have ever encountered. Imagine if you discovered something more powerful than anything you have seen before. Now consider the Truth. Consider the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. This is the precious gem. This is the “something that’s more amazing.” This is the “more powerful than anything you have seen” and so much more!

Jesus said that He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). We understand that all truth is God’s truth. As believers in Jesus Christ, we believe that the Gospel is true. Because we believe in Jesus, we are called children of God. We are sons and daughters of the King. Sadly, it is easy to trade the truth about God for a lie. It has happened in the past and it will continue to happen. Paul wrote about people who did just that, and they “served the things God created” instead of serving God.

Be careful not to do the same. Keep your eyes focused on the truth. To be able to detect the lies of the world, it is crucial that you know the Word of God. To know His Word, you must spend time chewing on it. Read it. Remember it. Keep it with you. Study it. Meditate upon it. The more you embrace His Word, the less likely you will trade the truth for a lie.

“They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator Himself, Who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.” – Romans 1:25 [NLT]

What is Truth

Matthew 27 / Mark 15 / Luke 23 / John 18-19

Pontius Pilate – Roman Governor –Procurator.

  • He was in charge of appointing the high priest and controlling the Temple and funds.
  • He had full control of the province.
  • He had full powers of life and death as he could reverse capital sentences passed by Sanhedrin.
  • He had a bad reputation with Jews and Samaritans.
  • He was guilty of slander, robbery, violence and murder – and at least twice was called to account by the Roman imperial authority.
  • Because people threatened Pilate, that they would inform the emperor that Pilate hadn’t eliminated a rebel against Rome, Pilate went against what he knew was right. He didn’t do the right thing.
  • He was later removed from his office for unnecessary and brutal treatment of his subjects.
  • Pagan historians only mention Pilate when mentioning his authorization of the death of Jesus (Tacitus).
  • Historians documented that Pilate was forced to commit suicide during reign of Gaius (AD 37-41).

 1) DISCOVER THE TRUTH – What is Truth?

Jesus told Pilate, “In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth” John 18:37 (NIV). The question that Pilate and many others have asked is “what is truth?” (v. 38 NIV). The Bible mentions the word “truth” over two hundred times. God revealed truth to us through Jesus. Jesus says in John 14:6 that He is “the way and the truth and the life” (NIV).

I believe absolute truth is God’s truth. The Bible is God’s Word and God’s Word is Truth. The Bible says that God cannot lie (Titus 1:2), which therefore means that He speaks only what is true. The Psalmist writes “Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth” (Psalm 86:11a NLT). God is the source of all truth. I believe Jesus is “the way and the truth and the life” and I believe that Jesus is infinite, living Truth.

When we read the garden scene in Genesis 3, it is quite clear that God presents absolute truth with regard to this tree of knowledge of good and evil to Adam and Eve. Satan challenges God’s truth, and deceives Adam and Eve into questioning what God says as well. Even today, Satan attempts to get us to challenge God’s Truth, to ask “did God really say” when we encounter His Truth. God’s Truth does not change; though we may attempt to misrepresent or skew His Truth, it still remains as Truth, as absolute reality. We can choose to accept His Truth and live by it, or to deny it and live as a fool, lost and wandering in search for another alternative which just is not there.

Some people believe that there is truth and it can be found through science and logic. Anything claimed of God that has no scientific or logically basis is not seen as being true. Other people reject the idea of absolute truth and believe that what may be true for one person is not necessarily what is true for another person. Truth is what we make it to be and we each will find our own truth. That means one person can claim God to be God and that is seen as Truth for that person. Another person may claim that there are three gods and that is truth for that particular person.

Many people will spend their lives asking the same question as Pilate, and will never get the true answer because they are seeking for answers in the wrong place. I cling to the promise found in John 16:13, “But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth” (NIV). Only through a relationship with God, as a result of Christ’s redemption and the working of the Holy Spirit are we able to understand Truth. If only Pilate realized that he was speaking to the Truth, he would have seen the answer was right before him.

Truth is God’s Truth

Jesus is God’s Truth – John 1 says Jesus is full of grace and TRUTH.

God’s Word is Truth (John 17:17) – We find truth when we read & study the Bible. We need the belt of Truth in place (Ephesians 6:14)

We are to correctly handle/explain God’s Truth (2 Timothy 2:15)

To be a disciple of Christ, you must continue in His Word and you will KNOW the truth and the truth will SET YOU FREE. (John 8:32)

Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true. – John 18:37 [NLT]

Every child of God knows the truth as Jesus, and is on the side of truth, and stands by it.

Pilate avoided the truth:

  1. Tried to get out of the situation?                             Sent Jesus to Herod (Luke 23:6-17)
  2. Tried to get someone to side with him?
  3. Tried to put responsibility on someone else – Told Jews “judge by your own law” – a mockery (John 18:31)
  4. Tried to escape – offer to release “criminal” (John 18:39)
  5. Tried to washed his hands – though it didn’t cancel guilt (Matthew 27:24)
  6. Tried to compromise – Had Jesus flogged (John 19:1-3)
  7. Tried to appeal to sympathy – Shall I kill your King? (John 19:15)

All this despite Pilate never having doubt of Jesus’ innocence – 3 x’s said NOT GUILTY!

2) DOING THE RIGHT THING EVEN WHEN IT COSTS EVERYTHING

When you know the Truth – then you must make a choice – what will you do with the Truth?

James 1:23-24 speaks about person who stares in the mirror and walks away, forgetting what he looks like. The mirror becomes useless after you walk away from it. James was saying that if we simply hear the word but don’t act, it’s useless just like the mirror.

St. Augustine said, “Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. Right is right even if no one is doing it.”

Right choice could mean

Social Rejection / Career Loss / Public Ridicule

“Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth” (Psalm 86:11a NLT).

Here’s my heart, Lord

Speak what is true

Here’s my life, Lord

Speak what is true

Feet Planted

Yesterday I read something that said that it was important to firmly plant both feet on the ground—that it was a good foundation. For each person, when we stand with our feet firmly planted on the ground, there is only so much strength and ability to keep us standing. For me, because of health issues, sometimes I feel as if the wind could blow me over.

If you go through life believing you only have to plant both feet on the ground, that you only need to rely on yourself and your own ability and strength, you are going to get knocked down. It might take awhile. You might not come down easy. But you cannot live life in your own strength and make it to the finish line still standing.

God’s Word tells us that we need a firm foundation. The only firm foundation is Christ Jesus. We stand firm on Him. He helps us to stand firm. He gives us the strength to stand firm. It is because of Him that we are able to stand in victory at the end of the race. So today, don’t just plant both of your feet firmly on the ground—plant yourself in Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, the Life.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” – Matthew 7:24-27 [NIV]

No Other Way

My neighbor recently got a dog who always wants to leave his designated area to come say hello to my dog. Each day he tries to walk off his master’s porch, walk down the pavement, and join Max. Since he was unable to find any success choosing the way of the stairs, he decided to sneak around another way. When Max and I approached, his master looked for his puppy in the usual area; however, he wasn’t there. He was already at some bushes making his way toward Max from another route.

We often think we can take another way to get to a destination. We have shortcuts and back roads. There are times when we can skip steps and save time. But when it comes to our relationship with God, there are no back roads, no shortcuts; there is no way to skip any steps.

I was reminded of John 10:1 when I saw the dog sneak around the gate. In this verse, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!” There is only one way to the Father and that is through Jesus, and there is only one way to receive Eternal Life, only one way to have a relationship with God—through Jesus.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” – John 14:6 [NIV]
