Children’s Ministry Lesson: Abraham Abundance and Blessing

Getting Started: Discussion of Count the Stars Simile

First tell children about some similes – brave as a lion, crazy like a fox, slow as molasses. Visual illustration: molasses poured out slowly.
Genesis 15 says “look up at the sky and count the stars… so shall your offspring be.” – As many people as stars.
Can you count the stars? Do you know how many stars there are in the sky? What does this mean? (You can also show your favorite constellation to intro to these questions).

Craft / Activity

Watered down glue / glitter / black or dark blue construction paper / brown or beige construction paper

Cut the brown / beige construction paper as a small land mass before class.

Spread the watered down glue on the papers. Put the land mass at the bottom of the paper. Sprinkle glitter on the paper. Be sure to have a small box to catch the glitter that falls from the paper.

On the land mass, write “Count the Stars” – Genesis 15:5

After doing the activity, begin digging deeper into the lesson (this allows for the papers to dry and for children to have another visual learning experience).

Genesis 12:1-5 – God’s promise to Abram

I will make you into a GREAT NATION

I will make your NAME GREAT

You will be A BLESSING

… ALL PEOPLES ON EARTH WILL BE BLESSED THROUGH YOU.

(New Home – Great Name – Family)

Abram (75 years old)  – left Haran with Sarai and Lot.

Genesis 15:2-6 – Count the Stars

Abram asked what the Lord could give. He had no children. The Lord said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars –if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Genesis 18:10-14 – Sarah Laughs

Three men visit Abraham and food is prepared. They explain that Sarah would have a son. Sarah laughed. Is anything too hard for the LORD?

Genesis 21:1-7 –Isaac born

The Lord did as He promised. Abraham and Sarah had a son, Isaac, God has brought me laughter. Abraham was 100 years old.

Discuss what this means to us. Discuss blessing. Discuss abundance.

Closing Verse: 2 Corinthians 9:8

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

What does this mean? What are we promised?

Children’s Ministry Lesson: Parable of the Foolish Rich Man

This lesson is on the Parable of the Foolish Rich Man. The passage to read is Luke 12:13-21. The key verse is Luke 16:13. The front page of the activity sheet is divided into two sides. The object is to have the children list what they think both types of people would look like in their opinion. The one side would be those who are rich toward God and the other side would be those who are like the foolish rich man. On the second side, there is an activity to look through the passage and notice all of the key words that focus on the self. There are a few verses included with the lesson for the kids to reflect upon further with parents at home.

To open the class, I am going to ask some questions that would give the children options of seeing how people could put God first or put money or themselves first. From there, I am going to tell the parable and have a few students read some verses. I got some granola (honey and oats) to share with the children as I discuss this abundance of crops. Then we will discuss further using the activity sheet I created (front and back). Our craft will be something I’ve seen around in the past. We will make silos using toilet paper rolls. I am going to get the tubes of toilet paper covered with white paper before class and glued at the bottom to save time. They will decorate the silos and then instead of filling them with crops, fill them with blessings from God. Then every night they can pull out a blessing and thank God. When the blessings run out, they are encouraged to fill the silos up (or even fill up as they see more blessings).

Grace

This weekend, the Sunday School lesson focuses on the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. Matthew 20:16 says, “So the last will be first and the first will be last.” Grace is when you get what you don’t deserve, and in this parable we see the workers who were there the longest reacting because people were getting the same payment for working less.

We have a problem with grace. Some of us don’t know how to accept grace, while some of us like to drown ourselves in it and think it gives us protection to keep on sinning. Some of us can accept it for ourselves, but we don’t like when it is given to others. Some of us cannot show grace to others. Some of us try to earn our own way.

graceFor the lesson, I searched for different song titles including the word “grace.” This collection provides some different words that some associate with grace. What does grace mean to you?  With regard to this parable, place yourself in the position of the workers who were there all day. How do you feel when those who barely worked received the same payment?  Consider this in your own situation, at your own workplace—how do YOU feel when your co-workers are getting what you think they don’t deserve?

This is a hard lesson for anyone. We so often can find ourselves thinking someone doesn’t deserve something. Someone doesn’t deserve the promotion. Someone doesn’t deserve the help. Someone doesn’t deserve the forgiveness. Someone doesn’t deserve—GRACE. That’s grace! We don’t deserve it. But we are given it anyway. Stop pointing out what isn’t deserved. Accept grace. Give grace. And remember, no one deserves it, but God has given it anyway out of love, because of who He is. That’s the beauty of grace.

“For grace proclaims the awesome truth that all is a gift. All that is good is ours not by right but by the sheer bounty of a gracious God.”

                                                                                             – Brennan Manning

“Grace is the free, undeserved goodness and favor of God to mankind.”

– Matthew Henry

Children’s Ministry Lesson: Wise or Foolish (The Wise and Foolish Builders)

Tomorrow’s lesson is about the Wise and Foolish Builders which can be found in Matthew 7 and Luke 6 of the Bible. I have created a simple handout for the children to complete. The handout will challenge children to grasp the true meaning of the selected passages, to understand obedience, and to consider a personal plan of action to move forward. Too often, we consider this verse as telling us to build our lives on the Rock (Jesus), but obedience isn’t discussed.

King Jehoshaphat was considered a good king, but  what poor choice did he make that got him into trouble? Have you made a similar choice? Bad company corrupts good character. Could King Jehoshaphat have done things differently to still help King Joram out or was there no good way to move forward with helping him?

Jacob: Jesus was here in Capernaum before, which caused quite a stir among the locals. To the amazement of a crowd, He spoke to a demon, commanding it to leave the body of a possessed man, and astonishingly, the evil spirit listened to that mysterious man……
