9-17-17 Not Ashamed

The Gospel – Romans Road to Salvation

  • Because of our sin we are separated from God (Romans 3:23)
  • The penalty for our sin is death (Romans 6:23)
  • Jesus paid the penalty for our sin (Romans 5:8)
  • If we repent of our sins & confess Jesus as LORD we will be saved (Romans 10:9-10, 13)

WE ALL NEED THE GOSPEL – WE ALL NEED JESUS

Romans 1:1-7

  • God promised Good News long ago (v.2)
  • The Good News is about the Son (v. 3)
    • Jesus was shown to be Son of God when raised from dead by power of Holy Spirit – He is Jesus Christ our Lord (v. 4)
  • Through Christ, God has given us privilegeand authorityto tell everyonewhat God has done so they will believeand obeyand glorify God(v. 5)

Romans 1:16 – For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:17 –This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.

Ashamed – Epaischunomai (ep-ahee-skhoo’-nom-ahee) – disgraced, shame for wrongly identifying (aligning) with something (association with someone), disgraced because you misplaced your confidence or support (believed a big lie). ASSOCATION WITH JESUS, BELIEVING THE GOSPEL

  • Is being ashamed a denial?
  • Is being ashamed not a full acceptance of Jesus?
  • Is being ashamed an act of disobedience of the Great Commission?

Mark 8:38For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Matthew 10:33 – But whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Fatherwho is in heaven.

2 Timothy 2:12If we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us.

1 John 2:23No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

Be shamed, but do not be ashamed.

2 Corinthians 11:23-27– Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

Paul was shamed, but he was not ashamed

2 Peter 3:9– The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Romans 1:21-23

Romans 1:28-32

Is this any different from the world today?

No, not really

Should be a constant reminder – we ALL need Jesus!

Romans 1:14– For I have a great sense of obligationto people in both the civilized world and the rest of the world, to the educated and uneducated alike.

We all have an obligation – We are all to respond to the Great Commission.

How are you responding to the Great Commission?

What should we do? How can we live unashamed?

Hebrews 12:2– Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  • Keep your eyes on Jesus– seek Him first (Pastor Miles last week)
  • Remember the joy is coming– have an eternal perspective (Jesus saw past the Cross)
  • Scorn shame– pay no regard to the shame, see the shame as insignificant

Unashamed

As the school bus passed by, my daughter waved to me, unafraid of what her classmates might say if they spotted her waving to her mum. She was not ashamed to show her love for me. I’ll admit that after the bus was out of view, I thought of her wave and was teary eyed that she shows her love despite the consequences she may face. I sometimes wonder if we are that open to show our love for Christ.

We are told that if we are ashamed of Christ, that He too will be ashamed of us (Mark 8:38). Yet, we are not always boastful of what Christ has done for our lives. We are not always quick to tell our co-workers about Jesus because most of the staff is not Christian. When we get through a difficult situation, we sometimes would rather attribute it to some self-help book or quick fix solution instead of sharing what God did for us. Some people skip praying when they are out at a public restaurant because they do not want people staring.

Jesus stood on trial with humility. Jesus hung on the cross with humility. Jesus was not ashamed to undergo whatever it took– and it took everything– so that we could have a relationship with God and have everlasting life. I pray today that you will ask the Spirit for guidance to share your faith today. I hope you will be able to step out and share Jesus and see how greatly it blesses you and others.
