Keep Alert

This morning during our walk, Max once again proved that he is a horrible hunter. As a Labrador Retriever, his breed is known for hunting and retrieving. The only thing Max is good at retrieving is tennis balls and food that may fall to the floor. During our walk, I could see up ahead that there were two small dogs. Marci saw them too. Max, however, caught the scent of the dogs with his nose, and his head went down. With his nose to the ground, he tried to sniff them out though they were right in front of us. Simply lifting his head and the great mystery would have been solved.

All laughs aside, the truth is that many of us find ourselves not staying alert. Rather than lift our heads or open our eyes, we walk around blind to what is happening. But the Bible tells us often to stay alert. We are to keep alert because we don’t know when the Lord will return. We are to keep alert because the devil prowls around trying to steal, kill, and destroy. Sadly, we oftentimes live life very much like we need a few cups of coffee—dazed and confused.

How can we be on the alert? It takes a lot more than coffee, though I love coffee. If we are so focused on God and His Word, we are more likely to recognize God moving around us. If we are fixing our eyes on Him, it is easier to know what is not of Him. As you continue to drown yourself in the Word of God, you will be more familiar with the great I AM, and His attributes. As you quiet the noise of the world, and spend time communicating with Him (prayer), He will open up to you with revelation.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8 [NLT]

Being Faithful to God

Definition of faithful: Loyal, constant, steadfast, devoted, committed, dedicated, unswerving.

Revelation 19:7-9 ESV Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”      His Bride has made herself ready

Matthew 25:1-13 – Parable of the Ten Virigins

  • BELIEVE – you must be saved. What is holding you back? Disbelief / fear / doubt
    1. Double-minded – James 1:6 NIV But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. Double-minded – “dipsuchos” / dis meaning “twice” and psuche meaning “mind.” – divided in interests, uncertain, two-faced, half-hearted. You can’t half believe God.
  • ACT – you weren’t saved to stand still – This is how you get to know God better.
    1. Bible – Read it / Study it – Individually and in Group – only offensive weapon
    2. Prayer – Prayer is a two way conversation. (ex: Bro Lawrence)
    3. Church – Worship / Community
  • DRESS – you must be dressed to stand firm
    1. Ephesians 6:13 NLT Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. – God’s own nature / Dressed for battle – battle for souls
    2. Clothed in Righteousness – “I will sing for joy in God, explode in praise from deep in my soul! He dressed me up in a suit of salvation, he outfitted me in a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom who puts on a tuxedo and a bride a jeweled tiara.” (Isaiah 61:10 MSG)

Lamentations 3:25 MSG “God proves to be good to the man who passionately waits, to the

                                                                                                                woman who diligently seeks.”

Act Justly / Love Mercy / Walk Humbly – Micah 6:8 NLT

Love God. Love Others ( Deuteronomy / Gospels)

“‘I came by again and saw you, saw that you were ready for love and a lover. I took care of you, dressed you and protected you. I promised you my love and entered the covenant of marriage with you. I, God, the Master, gave my word. You became mine. I gave you a good bath, washing off all that old blood, and anointed you with aromatic oils. I dressed you in a colorful gown and put leather sandals on your feet. I gave you linen blouses and a fashionable wardrobe of expensive clothing. I adorned you with jewelry: I placed bracelets on your wrists, fitted you out with a necklace, emerald rings, sapphire earrings, and a diamond tiara. You were provided with everything precious and beautiful: with exquisite clothes and elegant food, garnished with honey and oil. You were absolutely stunning. You were a queen! You became world-famous, a legendary beauty brought to perfection by my adornments. Decree of God, the Master.”

(Ezekiel 16:8-14 MSG)

Always Be Ready

When my daughter thought I was returning at one time, but I was returning a bit earlier, she decided to put her chores off till later in the day. To her surprise, she did not hear the correct time and since she put off her chores, I returned before she even started the work she was assigned. As I walked into the kitchen, she immediately said, “I didn’t know you were coming home already” and she began running to quickly do her chores.

If she would have not put off doing her chores, she might have had some or all of them accomplished before I returned. She was only off a few hours from the actual time I was going to return, which meant she was waiting till the last minute to prepare herself for my return.  This is so like those who are not prepared for the return of Jesus. We don’t know the time of His return, but we do know that He is coming. We have a task set before us and we should not be found pushing things off thinking he will be awhile.

In Matthew 25, the bridgegroom took a long time to arrive so people began to tire and fall asleep. Some of the virgins were wise and had oil, while others were foolish and had none. Eventually the bridegroom came and to the people who were not prepared came the punishment of not being allowed entrance to the wedding feast. It is so important to always be ready.

“So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.” – Matthew 25:13 [NLT]
