How the Mighty Have Fallen

In 2 Samuel 1 we read about the death of Saul and Jonathan at the hands of the Philistines. David is told this news and he lamented. He writes this long lamentation that says “how the mighty have fallen” three times (vs. 19-27). It is such a beautiful collection of words as a tribute for these men. As I read through this passage, it is easy to see how David wanted to honor these men; however, it also can serve as a reminder—“How the mighty have fallen.”

No matter how strong we are on our own, we will fall. No matter how much we achieve, we will fall. No matter how high up the ladder we climb by our own human standards, we will fall. We will fall. But that’s not the end of the story. It’s only a small smidgen of life. God has promised us life and life in abundance (John 10:10). His Word says that if we believe in Him, we will have everlasting life (John 3:36). We may fall but we will rise with Him. On His shoulders He carries us home (John 6:40).

You can trust in the promises of God for He is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9). He is true. He is the Promise Keeper. Each of us will fall again and again, but with each sin we are covered by the blood of Christ. Each of us will one day breathe our last breath, but that last breath of air is not the end. Oh how the mighty have fallen— but oh how the children of God will live forever with Him rejoicing together, singing “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8 NIV).

“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.” – John 5:24 [NLT]

Ask for the Moon

When I was younger I knew that money was not pouring from the sky so when it was time to ask for something for my birthday, I always tried to consider something that was a reasonable price. I did not want to ask for something that cost a lot because I knew it was not affordable.

With God, things are very different. You can ask for anything. I am not saying this so that you start asking God for a billion dollars instead of a million dollars. I truly hope that money is not your big request of God. What I’m trying to say is sometimes we continue to pray for small things for God to do in our lives, and we forget that He is a big God.

Did you know that God wants to do something mighty in your life? He wants you to ask for anything. He wants you to be extravagant. “Ask for the moon” He tells Ahaz, and He wants us to think big too. He is a big God. Don’t spend your life praying small prayers when God has greater things waiting. He made you for greater things—pray like you believe it! Whatever vision He lays on your heart, pray about it. Don’t consider how big it is; instead remind yourself of how big He is and watch Him amaze you with His greatness.

“God spoke again to Ahaz. This time he said, ‘Ask for a sign from your God. Ask anything. Be extravagant. Ask for the moon!’”

-Isaiah 7:10-11 [MSG]

Mighty Power

Life can be tough. There are times when we can feel a bit overwhelmed and discouraged. Fear and doubt can creep in and we may sink lower into despair. I’ve been there and I will surely be there again.

We all have moments like these; however, we do not have to sink downward. We need to remind ourselves of the great power that we have through Christ. Remember that you have “the same mighty power,” – God’s power within you.

Don’t limit yourself by trying to do life alone. God gave you His Spirit to dwell within so that you can get through each day and accomplish what He has called you to do in life. He didn’t give you His Spirit to simply reside within you, but to be this “incredible greatness” that will help you to rise above and press onward to finish the race.

“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power.” – Ephesians 1:19 [NLT]
