Looking the Other Way

You can miss a lot of things when you look the other way. There are times when we purposely look the other way to avoid things, and there are moments when we do not even realize we are missing anything as we are focused in another direction. The Psalmist noted that God is good, but he almost missed seeing Him at all because he was too busy looking at people.

What has your attention today? Where are you looking? In this world, it is very hard to not look at the people around you and focus on them. With social media and television and magazines, we are able to even focus on people we never met, people who are famous. We place our attention on who divorced who, who looks the worse without makeup, who had a tantrum, who gained a lot of weight, etc. There are millions of dollars spent each year on magazines to keep up with celebrities. As we look the other way, we miss God, the great Almighty Lord of all. We miss seeing His goodness because our eyes are looking for what the world says is good, interesting, and pleasing.

Today I hope you consider where you place your attention. Today I hope you aim to not miss the goodness of God. It is all around you. Don’t let the world get you to look the other way. He is here. He is alive. He is good. And He loves you so very much. Don’t miss Him. Please, don’t miss Him.

“No doubt about it! God is good—
good to good people, good to the good-hearted.
But I nearly missed it,
missed seeing his goodness.
I was looking the other way,
looking up to the people
At the top,
envying the wicked who have it made,
Who have nothing to worry about,
not a care in the whole wide world.”

-Psalm 73:1-5 [MSG]

The Missing Wick

I love candles. Not only do they provide a calming atmosphere and a nice scent, but they also add some warmth to my home during this cold winter season. When I went to light up my one candle this morning, I realized that the wick was missing. I didn’t follow the instructions on the candle. The directions explained the need to trim the wick and the importance of only burning a candle for a few hours. I did not listen. I figured something as simple as a candle didn’t require instructions. Now my wick was missing. My candle was useless without the wick.

In life, we have God’s Word so easily accessible to us and yet there are so many times when we ignore His Word for whatever reason. We end up taking some bad turns, digging ourselves into a whole, making some mistakes. My candle wick was only missing. I took a screwdriver and I was able to locate the wick. If you have been ignoring God, do not think that you cannot humble yourself and come before Him now. No matter what mess you have made, what problems are weighing you down, what wrong turns you have taken in life, God can redeem you. He can cleanse you. He can make you a new creation. All you need to do is draw near to Him, and He will draw near to you.

Right now, my candle is burning bright. Allow God to shine His light in your life—and see how much greater life can be when He is at the center.

“And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.” – Colossians 1:20-22 [ESV]
