Insulting God

Some of us are very blessed by our country of birth, the families we were born into, and the opportunities that we have had in life. We are blessed. We are blessed to be a blessing.

Even so, some people oppress the poor. Rather than answer the call to serve and assist the poor, there are steps taken that thwart any chance of the poor having opportunities for change. There are people who turn their eyes and look past those in need, while there are others who take advantage of those people who are already struggling. These people could use a hand up, but instead receive a push downward.

The Bible tells us that those who oppress the poor insult God. When we take steps to tear down rather than build up, this goes against God’s design. He created all people. He wants the best for all of us. Today, look for opportunities to help those in need. Do what you can to be the difference and shine the light.

“Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honors Him.” – Proverbs 14:31 [NLT]

Beaten by Words

Pride can really beat a person up, but perhaps you are too proud to admit it. In Proverbs 14:3, we read about a foolish person who is proud. When he opens his mouth, it is like a rod that beats him when he speaks. What a great visual!

The words of the proud many times beat those who hear; however, often the words come around and smack the proud speaker just the same. The proud speak offensive words that provoke others. The words of the proud do not only provoke others, but also blasphemy God.

The wise keep safe by the words they speak. The wise are slow to speak. The wise are Spirit-led. Today, consider if you are taking a beating from your words. Are you safe or beaten?

“A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that beats him, but the words of the wise keep them safe.” – Proverbs 14:3 [NLT]

Fear or Despise

Life gives us the option of two paths—the right path and the wrong path. The path we take says a lot about our journey in life. In today’s verse, we read that the people who fear the LORD take the right path. The people who despise God take the wrong path.

To fear God means to recognize Who He is and thereby honor Him. When our eyes open to our Creator, when our eyes fix on Him, we begin to see a glimpse of His greatness. We cannot describe His greatness. We cannot understand His thoughts. We stand amazed at His unfailing love, at the sacrifice of His One and only Son. We fear the LORD and press onward along the right path.

For others, another path is taken. A hardened heart leads some down a very different path, a path that is opposite the one the children of God travel. This is a path God wishes no one to travel. It is a path that leads to death and destruction. It is a path those who despise the LORD desire to travel, not grasping the way, the truth, or the life. Today, consider the path you are taking? Are you on the right path?

“Those who follow the right path fear the LORD; those who take the wrong path despise Him.” – Proverbs 14:2 [NLT]

Folly Hands

Did you ever hear about Lady Wisdom and Sir Fool? “Lady Wisdom builds a lovely home; Sir Fool comes along and tears it down brick by brick” (MSG). How does one build a lovely home? How does a woman build a great household? Only with a strong foundation. A Strong Foundation.

We have the opportunity to build our life on the Rock or to build our life on something else. If we build upon the Rock, the storms can rage around us but the house will stand. If we build upon the Rock, it doesn’t matter what comes blowing on by because the house will not be moved. If we build on the sand, if we build our life as Sir Fool, we place our lives on the foundation of something other than Jesus. When the cookies crumble, oh how they crumble. A small breeze will knock us down. A storm will come and the house will fall, and it will be a great fall.

Folly hands are not hands that I wish to have anymore. I remember days when those were my hands. I remember when I tried to control everything. I remember when my foundation was myself. I remember when my foundation was money. I remember when my foundation was pleasure. I remember when my foundation was lies. Folly tears down brick by brick. Praise the Lord, He builds us up strong in Him. By His Truth and through His grace and because of His love, we can embrace Him and build on His Solid Foundation. Nothing will shake us. Nothing will break us. Nothing will snatch us from His hands.

“The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.” – Proverbs 14:1 [ESV]

Weigh Every Word

I never want people to believe everything I say or anything I say without checking it out first. When I write, I always like to include Scripture. I want you to go to you Bible and read it. I want you to seek the Holy Spirit and understand it. I do not want people to take whatever I say as truth without seeking it out on their own.

I worry about those who are naïve and take everyone at their word. The world is full of liars. The world is full of people who might misunderstand, misinterpret, or misuse Scripture. We are humans. We make mistakes. Every sermon I hear, I have my Bible open. I’m looking at the verses. I am sifting through passages. There are even times when I go home and look things over again. I might even crack open multiple translations and pull out a commentary.

Whether you are studying your Bible or doing something else, do not walk through life as a simpleton. Do not believe everything. Weigh ever word. Look into things for yourself. There are resources at your fingertips. I have learned so much in life from seeking out the Truth rather than believe the lies. Consider your steps. Give them thought.

“The gullible believe anything they’re told;
the prudent sift and weigh every word.”

-Proverbs 14:15 [MSG]

The Simpletons

I remember when I was younger and I would see people reading the magazines with all of the half-truths or even some stories that made no sense at all. There were some people who would read them and believe everything. It was printed on paper so it has to be true they believed. Today things are much worse. Today we have social media. People can see a lot more information—and some believe everything they are told.

I cannot believe some of the things I see online. What is worse is when I see things that I can easily tell are false, get passed onward to others. Lies are shared so fast on Facebook. Even when people finally realize that it is not true, another wave of people sees it and passes it along because they did not get the memo. This proverb today says that “only simpletons believe everything they’re told.” Others will “carefully consider.” Others will look into things. Others will seek the Truth.

The simpletons can continue to believe and share the lies, but it doesn’t change the truth. The Truth is always the Truth. Today let us not fall into the category of the simpletons. Let us remember that God’s Truth is Truth. Let us “carefully consider (our) steps.” Let us seek out the Truth. Let us seek Him.

“Only simpletons believe everything they’re told! The prudent carefully consider their steps.” – Proverbs 14:15 [NLT]
