No One Else

When we are small, we try to help ourselves. I remember my kids trying to do some things for themselves and making a mess because they did not know yet how to accomplish the task. It is cute. You might find toothpaste all over the bathroom sink. You may find milk all over the kitchen counter. But this behavior continues as we get older. Though we have a God Who is ever-present and loves us with an unfailing love, we try to fix every situation. We think we have the answers. We think we can make it work.

It is only when we are brought to our knees that we usually realize we cannot do life alone. We then give up control and ask God to help. We accept that we are frail. We accept that we cannot do everything. We accept that we are not in control. The Psalmist asked that God not be far from him. He understood that trouble was lurking around. He knew that no one else could help. When we understand this—when we accept that we cannot do life alone, and only God can help—then we are more apt to give everything to Him.

Today, recognize that trouble is always near. Evil is all around us. God alone can help us. Whatever we are going through, He alone can see us through. Invite Him to stay near. Seek His presence. Fix your eyes on Him. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord—the Maker of heaven and earth!

“Do not stay so far from me, for trouble is near, and no one else can help me.” – Psalm 22:11 [NLT]

Made Me Trust You

Trust is a difficult subject. Earning a person’s trust takes time and even then it can be lost in the blink of an eye. The Psalmist wrote, “Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.” The Message translation states, “When I left the womb you cradled me; since the moment of birth you’ve been my God.

The Psalmist speaks of trust, of a trust that comes from early on. From his early days, the Psalmist remembers his days cradled by the Lord. The trust he had for God led to hope and expectation. The trust he had for God made him secure. God was His hope, his security—his everything.

As you look back on your life, you will find reminders of God’s embrace. He cradled you time and time again. Maybe you haven’t been a Christian for a long time or maybe you have professed the name of Jesus for decades. No matter the time you have declared Him as your God, you have been cradled and loved. Today remember that the God you trusted to get you through everything in the past is the same God that is with you through each step today. You are not alone. He is still your hope and your security. Trust Him.

“Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.” – Psalm 22:9 [ESV]

His Own Thing

People are not always reliable for one reason or another. We often let each other down. We oversleep. We double schedule by accident. We run late. We don’t pay attention or lose focus. We misunderstand. We miscalculate. We even lie. I don’t think I would be far reaching to say that there is no person who did not let someone down.

In today’s passage, the Psalmist speaks about God who “has never let you down.” He further states that “He has never wandered off to do his own thing.” He is always there, always present, always caring, always loving—He is always.

We often wander off to do our own thing when we are supposed to be helping a friend, at work, attending a function, handling our parental responsibilities, etc. All we have is excuses for our shortcomings. But with God, there is no need for excuses. He never lets you down. He never wanders off. Today let us thank Him for always being present, for always listening, for always loving.

“Here’s the story I’ll tell my friends when they come to worship,
and punctuate it with Hallelujahs:
Shout Hallelujah, you God-worshipers;
give glory, you sons of Jacob;
adore him, you daughters of Israel.
He has never let you down,
never looked the other way
when you were being kicked around.
He has never wandered off to do his own thing;
he has been right there, listening.”
