When I was younger, my dad taught me to carry things on my shoulders. In doing so, you are better using your body to carry the weight and less likely to get hurt. But as I became an adult, I began to pile things on my shoulders in other ways. I began to keep a hold of my problems and try to fix them myself.
Some of our problems cannot be solved alone. Some of our problems are problems because we try to do things alone. But there’s another way—another option for each one of us in life. We can give it to God. We can say, “God, I cannot do this alone. I can only do this with your help.” We can give it to Him and take a step back. We can trust Him and let go.
Piling your troubles on God’s shoulders is not giving up. Yes, you are giving up control and trusting Him with it; however, you were never in control in the first place. He was and is always in control. Even so, you are not giving up. You are giving in. Giving in to the fact that you cannot do life alone, giving in to Someone better, giving in for something more. Peace beyond understanding. Infinite power. Unconditional, everlasting love. You cannot handle this alone. He will help you out. Trust Him.
“Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders—
he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out.
He’ll never let good people
topple into ruin.”
-Psalm 55:22 [MSG]
Though I am not a fan of temperatures beginning to decrease, I always enjoy the beauty of the changing of leaves. It is such a great blessing to take a nice, peaceful walk and see all of God’s handiwork. During a recent walk I began to think about the seasons changing, and how with each season God is still taking care of everything.
Even before a seed is firmly planted in the soil, it is cared for by God. As it sprouts and reaches high, God is nurturing it along the way. There is not a moment when God is not working in the life of the tree. Some people look at a tree in the springtime and believe as it starts to flower and bear fruit, that the tree has reached its climax. As the season changes and the leaves begin to turn colors, an onlooker perceives that the tree is declining. The leaves fall to the ground and the tree looks to be in disarray. However, another season comes and the tree once again shows the beauty people admire most.
Our lives are just like that tree. God knew us before we were and He carefully watches over us as the seasons of our lives turn. When we are young and learning how to do the simplest of tasks, He is there. As we begin to venture out of the back yard and make friends, He is present. When we graduate from school and move out of our parent’s home, He doesn’t leave our side. Even when all our leaves fall to the ground and we are hoping for the next season to begin, He is still there as our sustainer. Through the good and bad moments of our lives, He remains.
Sometimes we are down on our knees crying. We wonder if all the leaves that fell were worth it and if we will grow new leaves. We reach out asking for direction. We question if He is by our side. We want to know that everything is okay. We feel that if we lost our leaves then it is over. It is then when we must remember He gives us life. He is right there holding us and the season will change. No matter how many times the seasons change, one thing remains– God. He doesn’t let us go and He holds us up whenever we cannot find the strength to stand.
“Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.” – Psalm 55:22 [NIV]
