Recognize Today

Often we think that we are doing everything alone. We forget Who is with us. Today’s verse is an assurance of a victory. God would cross over ahead. God would subdue them. God had a great plan and He would do just as He promised. We only had to recognize.

Recognize today that the Lord your God is with you. Recognize today that His promises are true. Recognize today that He is a devouring fire. Recognize today that you are not in this alone. He is with you. He is for you. May He make His presence known to you in a new and intimate way.

“But recognize today that the LORD your God is the one who will cross over ahead of you like a devouring fire to destroy them. He will subdue them so that you will quickly conquer them and drive them out, just as the LORD has promised.” – Deuteronomy 9:3 [NLT]

Foolish Disguise

Every time I read today’s verse, I ask myself why Jehoshaphat would even go with Ahab into the battle with this request. Ahab decides to disguise himself so he would not be recognized. Yet he tells Jehoshaphat to wear the royal robes so everyone can tell that he is the king. Something happens though—things do not go as Ahab was hoping.

Ahab was hoping his disguise would save his life. If anything, Jehoshaphat would be targeted due to his attire. But Ahab couldn’t understand that God’s plans cannot be thwarted. You can hide. You can dress differently. You can do whatever you like to avoid something, but God sees you and His plan cannot be thwarted. Not only was Ahab hit, but Jehoshaphat was kept safe.

Remember that you cannot wear a disguise in front of God. He knows your inward parts. He knows every piece of your life. He knows everything about you—things you might not yet know. So don’t put on a foolish disguise. You’re not fooling Him.

“The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘As we go into battle, I will disguise myself so no one will recognize me, but you wear your royal robes.’ So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle.” – 1 Kings 22:30

Recognize and Refuse

There are moments in life when we recognize what is right but we do not always do what we should in response. We like to call it our sin nature. In Isaiah 42, it spoke of those who understood what was right but they did nothing. The people heard what they were to do, but they did not act.

James said we are to be doers of the word. True faith requires action. The people Isaiah was referring to knew what was right but did not act on it. We do the same thing today. It is easier to refuse to act. It is easier to ignore. It is easier to accept what the world accepts.

Today let us challenge ourselves to listen. Let us recognize what is right and act. Let us stand firm in Christ. Knowing and refusing to act is worse than not knowing at all.

“You see and recognize what is right but refuse to act on it. You hear with your ears, but you don’t really listen.” – Isaiah 42:20 [NLT]
