Be Present

Be alert.

Be present.

God promises to do something brand new in our lives—in each of our lives if we let Him. In this passage He says that “it’s bursting out.” Other translations ask, “Do you not see it?” or “Will you not be aware of it?” And these are valid questions for us all.

In life today it is so easy to be alert to so many different things all at once. We love to multi-task. We cannot keep focus on only one thing. We find ourselves thinking about our past and thinking about our future. We find ourselves overwhelmed; too busy to pay attention to what is right in front of us. We find ourselves with our noses in our smartphones or buried in work, too occupied to look up.

This passage says to be alert, to be present—to pay attention because God’s doing something new for His people. Guess what? He’s doing something right now in your life. Yes, YOUR LIFE. You can be present. You can be alert. You can take heed and be a part of this great thing or you could miss it all. Don’t you see it? Will you not be aware of it? Today, I pray you are alert. Today, I pray that you pay attention. Look. Watch. See.

“Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.
It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?
There it is! I’m making a road through the desert,
rivers in the badlands.”

-Isaiah 43:19 [MSG]

He Knows

A child was trying to get a Matchbox Car he wanted by hiding it from his mother for she already said he could not have the toy. He thought he was pretty clever in hiding it underneath some other items on the conveyor belt at the checkout; however, she was onto his tactics. She knew what he was thinking and she was expecting his deceptive actions. Without even having to dig around the barricade to find the hidden toy, she said she did not want to purchase the item underneath. She knew what was there. She knew what he did.

God knows what we do as well. He even knows our heart. There is no way to hide what you are really feeling or what you have done, are considering doing, or will do at some time. He knows all. So why try to hide? Why be one person at one time and then be a different person—the real you—at another time? Why try to “cover up” something you have done, thinking it will remain hidden? God sees. God knows. You cannot hide it from God.

He knows. He knows you. He made you. He formed you together. You can see this in two ways—trying to hide from Him though there’s no way to hide—or trying to seek His will for your life and see the beautiful plan He has designed specifically for you. Why walk in disobedience, trying to hide from a loving Father, when you have the opportunity for so much more? Let us get to know Him better and stop the hiding-and-seek game.

“Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.” – 1 John 3:19-20 [NLT]

Only Believe

We like to complicate things in life. We can make a three word sentence trivial. Interpretations and experiences cause us conflict. We need to see evidence. We are very doubtful, skeptical of anything. We have so many documentaries showing us proof that something is true, and then so many others to counter that theory. We are a society that needs DNA analysis, sheets full of statistics, a handful of witnesses, video footage, photos, and still we are skeptical.

With us wanting so many facts and to be shown proof, we often will have battles with doubt. We get into a situation that seems glum. Will God really see me through this? Why is God allowing this to happen? I don’t understand. Show me. I need proof. Is He even there? We become skeptical of what God can do in our lives because we allow the doubt to win. We limit God with our shaky faith.

Thomas asked to see Jesus’ wounds to believe, and only then did he believe. The other disciples believed after seeing as well. In Mark 5, Jairus asked Jesus to heal his ailing daughter. Before they could get to his daughter, she passed away. When Jairus was told the news, Jesus said, “Do not be afraid any longer, only believe” (Mark 5:36b NASB). Only believe.

At times we need to only believe. It is hard. Things are not always going to be pleasant and everything is not always going to go well. But God has promised us that one day things will be perfect. This is a promise that I cling to, knowing that Jesus has overcome, and therefore so will we.

If there is something going on in your life right now and you are doubtful, only believe. Only believe that He is big enough. Only believe that He has overcome. Only believe that things will one day be perfect. Only believe that He loves you so much. Only believe.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”
– John 20:29 [ESV]
