When do you like to pray? Do you pray daily? Weekly? Only when in trouble? Rather than pray when in trouble, we are to live a life of prayer—a life where we commune with God.
Jeremiah wrote of people who treated idols, in this case a piece of wood or a stone, as their father or mother. They gave honor to the idols. They turned their back on God all the days of their life except when they were in trouble. When in trouble, they would call out for help, “come and save us.”
Calling for God when you are in a boat sinking won’t get you far in life. If you pray to Him daily, it is quite possible that you wouldn’t have all the trouble in the first place. He is your Father. Instead of shouting, “come and save us,” make each day a day where you call out to Him. There will be no need to shout when you are living in such a close relationship with Christ.
“To an image carved from a piece of wood they say, ‘You are my father.’ To an idol chiseled from a block of stone they say, ‘You are my mother.’ They turn their backs on me, but in times of trouble they cry out to me, ‘Come and save us!'” – Jeremiah 2:27 [NLT]
