The Psalmist declares hate for every false way of life. Other translations translate this as hating the wrong path or false propaganda. The Hebrew word “sheqer” is used here, meaning falsehood or deception. The complete verse says that the commandments of God result in understanding. When we have this understanding, the result is then hatred towards deception and falsehood.
We can better understand life and move forward living for Jesus by following the commandments of God. As we do this, we grow in our understanding and in our faith. In time, we begin to detest that which is false. God reveals to us His Truth. We aim to live by His Truth. Anything apart from that is no longer acceptable as our eyes are opened.
There are still people today who live the false way of life. Some of these people have always been blind to the Truth, while others have traded the Truth for a lie (see Romans 1:25). Today, pray that God would reveal to you hidden things to grow your understanding. Take some time to pray for those who are still on the wrong path, that eyes may be opened to the deception. Thank God for His commandments who are just, perfect, and true.
“Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life.” – Psalm 119:104 [NLT]
Life gives us the option of two paths—the right path and the wrong path. The path we take says a lot about our journey in life. In today’s verse, we read that the people who fear the LORD take the right path. The people who despise God take the wrong path.
To fear God means to recognize Who He is and thereby honor Him. When our eyes open to our Creator, when our eyes fix on Him, we begin to see a glimpse of His greatness. We cannot describe His greatness. We cannot understand His thoughts. We stand amazed at His unfailing love, at the sacrifice of His One and only Son. We fear the LORD and press onward along the right path.
For others, another path is taken. A hardened heart leads some down a very different path, a path that is opposite the one the children of God travel. This is a path God wishes no one to travel. It is a path that leads to death and destruction. It is a path those who despise the LORD desire to travel, not grasping the way, the truth, or the life. Today, consider the path you are taking? Are you on the right path?
“Those who follow the right path fear the LORD; those who take the wrong path despise Him.” – Proverbs 14:2 [NLT]
When I took Max for a walk, I noticed a cicada sitting on the sidewalk. I saw Max looking in the direction of the cicada and told him to let it alone. Max decided instead to look more closely at the cicada. The cicada made the familiar noise it is known for and Max jumped in the air in fear.
Max did not listen to me though I told him not to look further. I told him it was bad. He did not listen. Instead, he continued to look at the cicada and got even closer to it, allowing it to touch and frighten him. This reminded me of how we find ourselves not listening to God’s Word and the Spirit’s promptings, and instead we decide to continue down a path we were not supposed to travel. We do not realize the harm until we are up against the cicada.
Today consider what God is saying to you and trust Him when He is telling you not to do something. God is not watching to stop us from having joy and happiness in life. He wants us to have joy and happiness and so much more. He is not trying to prohibit us but to enable us.
“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.” – Psalm 18:30 [NLT]
